Great Sand Dunes National Park is home to the tallest dines in North America raising 750 ft above the floor of the San Luis Valley. Although the Great Sand Dunes are far removed from major cities and highways it is a must see National Park. Best time to travel is early spring as the Medano Creek is still running, and cooler temperatures offer more comfortable hiking on the dunes.
Star Dune is the tallest dune in the park and it is a 3.8 mile one way hike trudging through the sand to the summit. Views from the top are phenomenal, but the best part is the journey back down. As the sand gives way under your feet it gives you the sensation of walking on the moon. Even if you are not going to tackle the dunes, find some shade, pack a lunch, and enjoy some good people watching of people sledding the dunes.
